What Foods to Eat on Your Low Carb Diet

Now that you have made that decision to eat low carb you need to figure out exactly what to eat each day. Remember you want to avoid sugars and white starches and eat more protein mixed with high fibre vegetables at each meal.

Breakfast Choices

If you like eggs then you are in luck! Eggs are a great source of protein plus it is easy to add some vegetables with them. You can make scrambled eggs with mushrooms and peppers, and then have a tomato on the side.

For those mornings when you feel like you don’t have time to eat make up some hard boiled eggs the night before. These are great for taking with you to eat for breakfast or lunch at work.

Other choices for breakfast include sausages, ham (just check the sugar level though) and bacon.

Lunch Choices

Of courses salads are great for lunch and you can easily add a variety of protein to them. Your protein can be chicken breast, turkey breast, tuna or any leftover meat from the previous night’s dinner.

Buying items like deli meats and rotisserie chicken can help making a healthy lunch easy and quick. Plus these foods will last for several days so you don’t have to keep coming up with new ideas too often!

If you don’t want to eat salads all the time you can make broccoli slaw, slice up cucumber and tomato and have these with your protein instead.

Snacks

Who doesn’t love to snack and knowing what to eat is important. Luckily on a low carb diet you have plenty of choices.  Here’s a quick list of some great low carb snack ideas:

  • Almonds
  • Pecans
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Boiled eggs
  • Peanut butter
  • Celery sticks
  • Dill pickles
  • Olives
  • Slices of cheese
  • String cheese
  • Strawberries
  • Slice of turkey or chicken deli meats

Dinner Choices

Dinner shouldn’t really be too difficult to plan. Protein choices can include roast beef, chicken breast, fish or turkey among others. This is really great when you have a family to feed. You can still make their favorite meats and vegetables and still include your own low carb foods. Remember kids do need more carbs so you don’t want to restrict their carb intake.

High fibre vegetables include broccoli, mushrooms, onions and broccoli slaw. These are wonderful additions for adding to any type of stir fry too! Red cabbage is another great low carb food choice. I love red cabbage and just make it with sliced onions, chopped bacon and a little red wine vinegar and water. Cook for one hour and your vegetable is done. This makes for wonderful leftovers too.

You should now have a good selection of choices for low carb foods to eat. Once you start looking at the carb values of foods you can make your own collection of easy to use foods. Add these as staples to your weekly shopping list.
